About The Malawi Project

The Engineers Without Borders Malawi team is working with the community of Kumponda in Southern Malawi. The team traveled September 2018 to close out the borehole project that was drilled last December. The borehole is clean and the community is happy with the outcome. Also, our cultural education team is working on presentations and workshops to educate students on ethical and sustainable international development.

Malawi Project Timeline

2013

Malawi Team Founded

The Malawi Team was founded, and began work with the Kumponda community in southern Malawi and the NGO Action for Environmental Sustainability. AfES conveyed that poor sanitation was contaminating the water in Kumponda. With the need for a water quality or water availability project, a travel team was sent from Cal Poly in December 2013

2017

Borehole Implementation

The team implemented the first borehole over Winter break. The well was successful and the community is happy with it.

2019

Implementation Trip Cancelled

An implementation trip was planned for another borehole during the Summer of 2019 and begin the assessment of a new community, but political tensions made it so the Cal Poly team was unable to travel.

Remote Implementation Plan

The team is currently working in collaboration with AfES, the community, and a local driller to remotely implement the borehole and hope to complete the implementation by 2020.

2014

Irrigation and Maize Mill Projects

The EWB team opened two projects related to agriculture: an irrigation project and human-powered maize mill project. The irrigation project was determined to be too large a scope for the Cal Poly team and the team instead focused on designing a maize mill powered by bicycle.

2018

2014-2018: Bicycle-powered Maize Mill

The team worked to construct and implement a bicycle-powered maize mill. They traveled five times to Malawi during this time. After long discussions, it was decided that we did not have enough knowledge and expertise to create a successful bicycle mill. In this way, we focused our time and money on another well in Kumponda.

2020

New Partnership

The team will begin a new partnership and project with a new community in Malawi along with our current NGO Action for Environmental Sustainability. We hope to travel in Summer 2020 to assess for a new community and monitor the borehole.
